The incumbent in this position will lead a crew of 6-10 youth ages 16-22 years old along with the aid of an assistant leader or intern in a 10 week session. The position requires preparation time and post session clean up. The leader will report to and take directions from the Program Director and the Program Coordinator.

Duties:

 

Lead crews on special work projects including, but not limited to, trail building and maintenance, wildlife rehabilitation, invasive species removal, and fence building and maintenance. The leader is required to supervise the crews during evening activities as well. These activities may include camping, cooking, recreation, environmental education, and group learning programs. The leader may also work with other staff in planning recreational and educational activities, interviewing participants, marketing, equipment purchasing and maintenance, and program evaluation. Crew leaders may also assist staff in data entry.

Requirements:

 

• Excellent skills dealing with teens
• Several years of experience desired
• Knowledge of backcountry camping
• Some experience with hand tools such as pulaskis and chainsaws
• Current CPR and First Aid certification
• Current Colorado Driver’s license
• Must be at leas 21 years of age

Work environment and physical requirements:

The leader will perform the duties of this position in a variety of settings. Pre and post session preparation will take place at the WCCC building with most of the training in the field. The work sessions are located in desert and mountain environments of Western Colorado. The position requires bending, lifting, pushing, stooping, carrying, and other heavy physical labor. The leader will be exposed to physically and mentally stressful situations and must be able to adapt accordingly. The leader has ultimate responsibility for the crew and the safety thereof.

Materials and Equipment:

The crew leader is responsible for his/her own work clothes, boots, work gloves, and sleeping bag and pad. All other equipment will be supplied and will be under the accountability of the leader.

Starting wage: $11.10 per hour starting
