Winter Projects:

Kannah Creek

The Kannah Creek watershed, located near the Grand Mesa, is Grand Junction's primary municipal water source. The United States Forest Service and the City of Grand Junction have started a ten year maintenance and preservation project for the area. WCCC has been hired to help with fuels reduction in the dense forest of Pinyon-Junipers along the Kannah Creek Basin.

Watson Island

Winter is often prime time for invasive species removal and this season is no different. We have a crew battling Russian Olive with chain saws and herbicide on Watson Island. We are working in conjuction with the Tamarisk Coalition on removing invasive species from the area and making it more recreation-friendly.

Monument Crew:
This summer, with assistance from our UrbanCorps group and the guidance of the Colorado National Monument, one of our in-town crews is working to build a better and more sustainable trail near Devil's Kitchen in the National Monument State Park.  This project involves hours of hard labor moving, placing, and crushing large rocks.  Part of the strategy of this project is to design a trail that facilitates long time wear, erosion control, and maximum usability.  View Photo Gallery

UrbanCorps:

Our UrbanCorps crews have been involved in a number of different projects this year.  The June crew started the summer making and placing Stay the Trail signs, then started work on the rehabilitation of Camp Kiwanis on the Mesa.  The July crew helped the Monument crew for a week with their trail project, and will be beginning another project soon.  View Photo Gallery

Out of Town Crews:

Both of our camping crews have been working on a number of projects this summer.  Our Saw Crew cleared land of pinion-juniper trees in a prime area for Sage Grouse mating.  The larger trees encourage hawks and other birds of prey to perch, inhibiting the Sage Grouse from performing their mating ritual.  The same crew also worked in Vega State Park to build a sustainable hiking trail, and is currently doing land maintanence at Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery.  The State Parks Crew worked on a number of projects this year.  They worked on weed mitigation at Billy Creek, built walking trails at Black Canyon of the Gunnison /Curecanti National Recreation Area and Crawford State Park; and worked on a bike trail at Bangs Canyon.  View Photo Gallery

Energy Crew

This year's Energy Crew has done an amazing job reaching those in need of assistance with their utilities.  We strive to educate the public about why the program is important and the positive impact that small in-home changes make, not only on their financial situation, but on the environment as well.  CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs) use approximately 1/4 of the energy of incandescent light bulbs and last 10,000 hours.  This year, the Energy Crew has installed a total of 4,806 CFLs!  They also installed a significant number of low-flow shower heads, which use 1.5 GPM and save an average of 10 gallons of water per 10 minute shower.
